Snoring & Sleep Apnea Treatment
Regain Your Health and Vitality
Sleep apnea is a serious condition that can rob you of your vitality, health, and even life itself. For years, snoring was considered nothing more than a common nighttime annoyance. However, recent studies show that snoring can be much more than just noise—it may increase the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, and daytime fatigue. Loud, habitual snoring is often a sign of a more severe condition known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep due to a blockage in the upper airway. This obstruction is caused by the collapse of soft tissues, preventing proper airflow.
Breathing pauses in OSA can last from a few seconds to minutes and may occur anywhere from five to 30 times per hour. These interruptions, whether partial (hypopnea) or complete (apnea), often last longer than 10 seconds. The severity of OSA is classified as mild, moderate, or severe, depending on how frequently these episodes occur throughout the night.
When breathing is disrupted, oxygen levels in the blood drop, putting strain on the heart and other organs. If left untreated, OSA can become a life-shortening and debilitating condition.
Who is at Risk of OSA?
Although men are at a slightly higher risk, OSA can affect both men and women. It becomes more prevalent with age, but even children can develop this condition.
Common Indicators of OSA:
- Neck circumference greater than 17 inches
- Loud, persistent snoring
- Daytime sleepiness or fatigue
- Difficulty concentrating
- Obesity
- High blood pressure
- Family history of sleep disorders
