Gum Disease Therapy

What is Periodontal Disease?

Gum Disease is an infection that destroys the attachment fibers and supporting bones that hold the teeth in the mouth. The main cause of periodontal disease is bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that consistently forms on teeth.
In the early stages of periodontal disease, there is little, if any, pain. However, if left untreated it may result in bone destruction and tooth loss. Our goal at Lakeshore Dental Implant & Aesthetic Dentistry is to detect it early on when it can be easily treated and controlled

Warning Signs and Symptoms of Periodontal Disease

If you have been told that you have gum disease, you may experience the following symptoms:

  • Gums that bleed when you brush or floss your teeth
  • Red, shiny, puffy gums
  • Sore, sensitive gums
  • Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
  • Pus between your teeth and gums
  • Teeth that are moving apart from one another
  • Difficulty in biting or chewing
  • Bad breath that will not go away

If you have one or more of the above signs or symptoms, please let one of our doctors or a dental hygienist know. Periodontal disease is one of the main reasons why adults lose their teeth.

Scaling & Root Planning – the most effective form of Gum Disease Therapy

Using scaling instruments, your hygienist will remove bacteria and dead tissue cells from the infected teeth. Following the removal of bacteria, she will spray an antibacterial medication under the gums, and give you the necessary tools and instructions to maintain good oral hygiene at home. The therapy appointment is repeated one to four times depending on the severity of the gum tissues at one to two weeks apart. A month after the last therapy appointment has been completed, a re-evaluation will be done to determine what health improvements have been achieved and to set up a periodontal maintenance schedule.
